About Us

Family

We have a small farm outside of Houston, Texas and we love Boykin Spaniels. This photo was taken the day we brought our Boykin home from the R & D Boykin Spaniel Ranch. This is Alice, and she is our first Boykin Spaniel.

Hunting

This little brown retriever can be found on hunts and in homes across America. Stamina in hot weather and eagerness to please make this dog a favorite in the dove fields, but Boykins have retained their spaniel flushing abilities and readily adapt to a variety of upland game hunting including pheasant, quail and grouse. An aptitude for water retrieving combined with their compact size assures these dogs a place in the duck boats and blinds as well. To learn more about the History of Boykin Spaniels, click on the History of the Boykin tab in the menu bar above.

Family Dogs

The Boykin Spaniel is an excellent choice as a pet, companion and hunting dog. The Boykin wants to be part of the family and does best when allowed to spend considerable time with the family. Love, affection and attention will not harm the hunting instincts of the dog and in most cases allows the Boykin to form a closer bond with the handler, master and family members. Remember that the Boykin responds best to training that is fun and wants most to please you, his master.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Becoming A  Puppy Parent to a puppy from Baughman Boykin's of Texas

Yes the buyer will sign a purchase agreement when purchasing the puppy which outlines the expectations and requirements for both the breeder/seller and the buyer.

Yes, the puppy will be registered with limited BSS and AKC registration by the seller/breeder and the buyer.  After the criteria is met in the purchase agreement (at 18 months -2 years of age) the seller will lift the limited registration.

BSS stands for The Boykin Spaniel Society. The Boykin Spaniel Society's mission is to improve on historic accomplishments so that the future of the breed is ensured. This organization is a wealth of information relating to Boykin Spaniels. You can find them online at Boykinspaniel.org

Limited Privilege Registration (LP): This status designation may be imposed by a breeder or person on a dog or pup to restrict or control the registration of its future offspring. If a dog or pup bears an LP-registration classification, then the offspring (if any) of such LP-registered dog or pup produced after such classification is imposed may NOT be registered with the Society UNLESS the person or breeder who originally imposed the LP-registration agrees to lift it.

The original intent of the LP designation was to allow breeders to set criteria for future breeding of their pups such as hip/heart/eye/patellar/DNA health clearances or field performance objectives. Once this criterion was met, the LP restriction would be lifted.

For more information about a LP, go to the BSS website at Boykinspaniel.org.

If the buyer does not have the puppy spayed or neutered, at the age of two years the buyer agrees to have the puppy tested for:

  1. Hip Displasia (OFA), AND  Patellar Luxation
  2. ACVO Eye Exam by a boarded ACVO Opthalmologist (CERF or OFA)
  3. Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC, Pawprint)
  4. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM, Pawprint)
  5. Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA, Pawprint)

Optional Tests but recommended by BSS:

  • Cardiac Evaluation and Elbow Displasia at ONE YEAR of age or older

It is not required, but it is expected if you want the breeder to hold a puppy for you until you pick up the puppy at 8 weeks of age.

Since we love our Boykins , we do not consider price of a puppy a primary consideration when choosing homes for our puppies, and will not quote prices over electronic media. Please inquire about a puppy online, and we will reach out to you regarding the price and all the details outlined in the purchase agreement.
